Bout of Books

Bout of Books 20 – The sign up post.

Bout of Books

I’ve been really lax at reading recently. I have an excuse. I’m pregnant and the minute I sit down with a book I fall asleep. Bout of Books is here to save the day.

For those that don’t know what Bout of Books is… here you go:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 21st and runs through Sunday, August 27th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 20 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

Basically I’m relying on the fun challenges to get me back to normal, book in hand (with my eyes open) and reading.

I’m not setting a strict challenge for myself but I do want to read every day during the bout. Even if it’s just a page. I’ll update this post with progress as I go. Join us. I promise it’s fun.

Bout of books 15 – Would You Rather?

Phone post – apologies for bad formatting.

Its day 2 challenge time and this one looked so much fun!  Thanks to writing my own fairytale for giving us this!

There is still time to sign up!

Would you rather:
Lend books to someone who dog-ears pages or to someone who reads with cheesy Cheetos fingers?
Eww…  Just…  Neither. I can’t choose one. Both of these are simply disrespectful. It’s bad enough they would ask to borrow books.

Would you rather:
Be able to meet one character of your choice or meet one author of your choice?
Definitely character and I would choose Juliette from Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. I am halfway through book one and from the very first page I wanted to hug her. She is a breath of fresh air as a protagonist.

Would you rather:
Never be allowed in a book store again or never be allowed in a library again?
Another really difficult one. I would have to say library, but only because my local libraries don’t stay very up to date and rarely have whole series in stock. It’s unfortunate as I am a wholehearted supporter of libraries and the work that they do. If I could change anything it would be to fund them better.

Would you rather:
Have to choose one of your favorite characters to die in their book or have to pick one of your favorite couples to break up in their book?
Break up, simple as. Death is permanent, a breakup doesn’t have to be.

Would you rather:
Be required to read Twilight once a year for the rest of your life or The Scarlet Letter once a year for the rest of your life?
I already read Twilight about once a year.

There… My dirty little secret.

Enjoy! Comment your links below. I would love to see yours.

Bout of books 15 – All in one post (from phone)

Please excuse the formatting. I am currently blogging from my phone.

It’s Bout of Books time!

What a perfect way to kick-start the reading year.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 4th and runs through Sunday, January 10th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. Targets

I am not setting any as such, except that I will read in some way every day this week. I will also attempt the challenges and I really want to make it to the twitter chat this time.

Updates

Day 1:

Read: Audio book – Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (Around 50%)

Challenge – #insixwords completed on Twitter.

Day 2:

Read: Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi (Around 70%)

Challenge – Would You Rather. Post is somewhere around here but I’m blogging by phone this time around.

Day 3:

Read: Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi (75%)

No challenge today because I didn’t get time and my bookshelf is a mess.

Day 4:

Read: finished Shatter Me.

Completed the challenge as a comment. (link will be added).  I’m really enjoying this bout. I’m determined to complete Unravel me by Sunday too!

Day 5:

Read: 6% of Unravel me by Tahereh Mafi.

No Challenge which was a shame as I liked this one. Just didn’t have the time spare.

Day 6:

Read: Nothing read. But I did clean my house. Jackpot.

I also took part in the twitter chat (and arrived on time)

Day 7: how is it the end?

Read:Pretty much nothing because I have been struck down with the flu. No challenge for the same reason.

Weekly recap : This has been amazing. I have focused on finding time to read and I’ve read more because of it.

Roll on next time x

Bout Of Books: What to read next challenge.

First a disclaimer: due to random multiple hour updates my laptop is unusable.  I am doing this on my phone.  This will likely mean hilarious autocorrects and really terrible layouts.

And on we go…
Over at Sarah reads too much we have been asked to tell you about three books that we have read this year that are really special.

I stared at my book case for a long time before settling on ten.  Then I realised that she said three, so I whittled it down to 14, 6, 11 and eventually three.

The first was easy.

The age of Miracles is probably one of the most interesting, scarily possible end of the world books that I have ever read. What if the world stopped turning?   It literally took me 24 hours.  I didn’t put it down,  didn’t sleep. It had me gripped in a way most books do not manage.

I don’t,  as a rule,  buy books on release.  I prefer paperbacks and my budget is limited anyway so I prefer to wait for sales. But the buzz about this one was loud and I adore Kiersten’s work.  Therefore it was a treat to me. I’m only sad that it is a standalone because the world and characters need to be explored more.

I love the unique mix of history, fantasy, magic and folklore.
Finally…

Because February 2016 needs to hurry up.
And as a bonus book.

Probably the most perfect,  most unfair and most devastating story ever. And the first time that I have hated the protagonist on page one,  and cried for her by the end.

Bout Of Books: I’m In

Bout of Books

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 17th and runs through Sunday, August 23th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional.  Count me in! I missed the last one because life is against me reading or blogging. It’s a long story but it includes thumb tendonitis, broken laptops, quitting smoking (I did it!!), uni work, family illness and a whole lot more. But no more! I am not taking it, I refuse not to read my books.

So I’m in.

Come join me.

My targets this bout:

  • Read every day – At least 100 pages. Not much, but with my record of not really reading for a few months this will be a good shove for me.
  • Update stats daily
  • Take part in some activities.
  • Comment on blogs at least one day for an hour.
I started on the 18th, so I missed a day.
Daily page stats.
18th – 76.
Book finished – Grey by E. L. James.
New book – The Heir by Kiera Cass

19th – zero.
Day trip stole my energy.

20th – zero.  Oops.
Tomorrow has 2 hour long train journeys There surely should be some pages.

21st – 23 pages.
The heir is interesting so far,  but it seems to be lacking somewhere and I can’t put my finger on it.  Hopefully it will pick up.

22nd – Zero.  But I did buy books.
Did the twitter chat! (we shall not worry about me turning up a few hours late)

23rd – 103 pages.
I made it! It is the final day and I finally hit my target. I also took part in the challenge and entered the big giveaway. I can’t wait until the next bout in January. Watch this space and join us.
